Tomorrow's the big day!

With only one more day until the baby's due date, we can't help but get more excited. Another doctor's visit this morning showed that I'm now 90% effaced and 3cm dilated. I'm making a lot of progress for not being in "real" labor. The doctors have said several times now that many moms spend the majority of their labor getting to 3cm. Having started there, maybe my labor will be shorter in the end. I can only hope.

The doctor also said they'd probably want to induce labor next Monday if the baby has still not arrived. I'm actually fairly against that idea. Everything I've read has said that induction has a higher risk of c-section, something that I'd prefer to avoid. Plus, one week past the due date is not abnormal for the baby to arrive. I'll be more willing to consider that option at two weeks late. Of course, if Baby Cowles shows up this week, then we won't even have to have that discussion with the doctor. (Everyone think good thoughts and keep your fingers crossed!) We'll cross that bridge when we come to it.

Looks like lots of us have lost out on the baby pool so far. I guess he wasn't planning on coming super early, as I had expected. He was sure showing signs of it but seems to have decided to take his time. We'll see if he decides to be an April Fool's baby. No sign of it yet today though.

Pregnancy updates

38 weeks and five days along now. Last Tuesday, I was 50% effaced. This Tuesday, 80% and 1-2 cm dilated. The doctor made me promise not to get too excited with that last bit of information, but I can't help it. I've had mild contractions (irregularly spaced and hours apart) for almost a week now. And, for the last three days, I've been regularly nauseous (very mild, but still annoying). I'm hoping he decides to make his arrival any time. Now would be fine with me.

Wednesday night my contractions increased to about one an hour right before bedtime. I was convinced that I'd be woken up by real labor in the middle of the night. Disappointingly, my alarm woke me up at my normal time with no sign of contractions at all. Thursday followed with no contractions and little movement by Baby. Today, Friday, he's back to moving around again, but no contractions.

My guess in the family baby pool for his arrival this Saturday at 4:30pm may not end up being right. Not surprisingly, my guess was the earliest one of the list. My mom's is next for Monday because she's convinced I'm always early for things. The rest of the family is clustered around the 1st of April (the actual due date) because they think I'm always right one time. My theory: my desire to be early for everything will balance out with Charlie's repeated habit of being late for things and Baby will arrive exactly on his due date (which is exactly Charlie's guess of April 1st at noon). I'm not sure how I feel about Baby having April Fool's Day as his birthday. I guess people will remember it.

Creation of a Blog

With the baby coming soon and most family and friends living too far away to visit frequently, I thought it would be a good idea to start up a blog detailing the exploits of Baby Cowles (once he arrives). My friends from Madison (now NC) have a great blog for their two kids and I have fun checking it every once and awhile for new pictures and stories. I think our family and friends would enjoy that for our new baby too.

Since I'm only in week 36 of the pregnancy, I don't really have any baby news to report just yet. He's definitely a kicker and can't seem to get comfortable. (Hopefully that doesn't mean he's going to be hard to please when he's out too.) Anytime I'm sitting down, he's moving around in there. Most of the time it doesn't bother me, but occasionally, he'll give a swift punch to my bladder or diaphragm that's more than slightly uncomfortable. He also gets hiccups fairly frequently, which our friends here at work say may mean he'll spit up more often. Hopefully not.

Other than that, I don't have anything else to report at this point. The due date is still set for April 1st and I'll add any updates if we have them.
