We have a crawler! (sort of)

Wesley and I were sitting on the floor last night after dinner playing with toys when he decided that he was REALLY interested in the Christmas tree nearby.  He dove, fell, whatever from a seated position to his stomach (it's not a very graceful move yet) and did his Superman routine for a while.  Hands and feet up in the air while bouncing on his stomach.  Then, he got up on his hands and knees and did his rocking routine.  Which, usually ends in his scooting backwards.  He's really good at the whole backwards thing and can pivot on his stomach in any direction to eventually end up where he wants to go.

But, last night, he decided to try something different.  He would lift first one hand and then put it down.  Then the other and put it down.  Then a knee.  He didn't fare so well up on his hands and knees and was getting frustrated that he wasn't going anywhere.  So, back to the trusty stomach position.  This is where he did something new.  He scooted his knees up without lifting his stomach off the floor and did a sort of army crawl towards the tree.  It was pretty tentative at first, only small movements forward, but as soon as he realized it was working and he was getting closer to the prize (aka grabbing the tree branches), he moved forward with a vengeance.  Ok, that's a bit of an exaggeration, but it was a lot faster.  Maybe we'll have some real crawling by Christmas?

p.s.  There's no video of the momentous occasion because we let some friends borrow the camera to film a funny skit for the department Christmas party.  I'm sure there will be many more opportunities to get it on tape so everyone can see our mobile boy.

Future musician?

Please excuse my horrible rendition of "Twist and Shout", but I had to show you how Wesley loves to sing along.  He has also decided that drums are his current favorite musical instrument.  We both still need to work on the vocals.

Christmas time is near!

When we were decorating the tree this weekend, we found this Santa hat in with the ornaments.  Wesley thought it was pretty funny when Mommy was wearing it around the house.

The hat is WAY too big for Wesley and kept falling down over his face.

He still liked wearing it though.

Thanksgiving weekend

Wesley's Thanksgiving meal of sweet potato chunks.  I was feeding these to him one at a time but put the whole plate on his high chair for the picture.  He loved it and immediately grabbed and squished pieces with his hands.  Most ended up in the bib of his overalls.

Mommy and Daddy's Thanksgiving dinner.  Starting at the bottom and going around clockwise: herb stuffed turkey, potato sour cream biscuits, wild rice stuffing (with cherries, apricots, and pecans), sweet potato casserole topped with marshmallows, corn bread pudding, green bean casserole, and cranberry sauce (from a can).  (not shown: ginger pumpkin cheesecake) Yum.

Wesley hanging out near the newly decorated Christmas tree.  (The hair dryer on the floor is there because we had just finished sealing the windows, not because we leave it under the tree.)

Why do you keep taking my picture Mommy?

What's the doggie barking at now?

Sweet potato puffs Take 2

Wesley has vastly improved on his fine motor skills with using his hands.  He's a pro at picking up the sweet potato puffs now.  This video is from yesterday morning.

(And, yes, I know the chair is dirty.  He gets food all over it almost every time he eats.  I'm washing it tonight.)

Happy little guy!

Wesley and Mom playing with his new toy cups.  He thinks Mom is hilarious when she puts the cup on or in her mouth.  What a cutie!

More play time

Happy boy!

Wesley's new favorite thing is to bang his toys together or move them against his mouth while he makes noises.

Fun with cups.

Play time on Sunday

Wesley loves playing on the floor with his toys, getting up on his hands and knees, and rocking back and forth.  No crawling yet, but he does scoot himself backwards.

Wesley's Aunt Ann bought him this shirt and called it a "Charlie shirt".  Daddy has one almost exactly like it.

Hmmm....

Super baby!

Sweet potato puffs

We've recently introduced Wesley to his first finger food.  These are sweet potato puffs from the Gerber graduates line.  He still has issues getting them into his mouth but occasionally he manages it.  His eyes light up when we pull out the canister now and he opens his mouth in anticipation.  I think they have sugar in them, so he only gets 1 or 2 puffs at a time.  It's good practice for his fingers though.  (We tried to get him to eat little pieces of banana this weekend, but he wasn't having any of it.  I think the texture was too weird for him.  We'll have to try again since the banana is probably a lot healthier for him than these puffs.)

New sound effects

In addition to the new "words" Wesley has been trying out, he's really into making new sound effects too.  Here's our current favorite.

Ya ya

More consonant sounds from Wesley.  He's favorite right now is "ya ya"

Getting ready to crawl

Wesley has started practicing his pre-crawl stance.  He loves to rock back and forth.  His teacher at daycare says he rocks so much when she puts him down for a nap that he manages to move the crib a few inches.  He does the same thing at home, but his crib at home is sturdier and doesn't move as much.

Pumpkin patch

We took Wesley to the pumpkin patch today.  The weather was gorgeous: sunny and ~60 degrees.  The perfect day for a trip outside.  It was actually even a little bit too sunny.  Wesley wouldn't look at the camera for very many pictures.

Wesley claiming his pumpkin.  "If I lick it, no one else will want it."

Mmmm... corn.  (Sorry Grandpa Pataky, we haven't given him any 'real' corn yet, so he doesn't know any better.)

New laugh

Wesley also developed a new laugh over the weekend using his nose.  And, to make it even funnier, he does it on cue, if you're willing to laugh the same way at him first.  Enjoy!

Funny throat noises

Wesley has been making a lot of funny noises these days while he experiments with "talking".  This latest one is hilarious.  He only does it once or twice on the video, but hopefully you can get the picture.  He basically gargles his own spit in the back of his throat.  Weird guy.

First sweet potatoes!

Wesley had his first taste of sweet potatoes on Saturday.  He seemed to really like them and still has yet to give us a funny face.  Still fun to watch.

Sippy Cup Lessons

Wesley started learning to use a sippy cup this weekend.  He quickly got the hang of it, since sucking on the cup isn't that different than a bottle.  He kept turning the cup upsidedown though too.

Still upsidedown.

Making faces at Mom.  It turned out that Wesley had a fever (100.7) when I was taking these pictures.  Poor guy.  Although, I guess getting him to use the cup was even more important for keeping him hydrated.

He's feeling better today (Sunday), but still seems to be a little sick. Coxsackie virus is going around his daycare, and we're hoping that's not what he's got because he could be home for the week before the daycare lets him come back.

Happy guy wondering why I keep pointing the camera-thing at him.

Fun with a pumpkin

Charles had a fun idea and bought a big pumpkin last weekend which we emptied in hopes of getting a picture of Wesley inside.  It turns out, the pumpkin wasn't quite big enough, but we still had fun with it.

Charlie trying to get Wesley to sit down in the pumpkin.

Wesley not so sure this was such a fun idea.

Wesley finally thinking the pumpkin was in fact funny.  (Maybe this was how long it took for the pumpkin juices to start seeping into his clothes or making it squishy under his toes.  In any case, he liked it.

Wesley balancing in the pumpkin by himself.  (This only lasted for three quick frames before Charlie had to support him again) The last two pictures are my favorites.

6 months and squash

Wesley at 6 months in his exersaucer

Very thoughtful expression Wesley!

First taste of squash!  Nothing.  No response.  He liked it, but there was no silly face.  Maybe his taste buds are broken?  We had the video camera going and everything (I'll post the video later) but he basically gave no reaction to the squash being different than the rice or oatmeal cereal.

He really likes grabbing the spoon and chewing on it.  Maybe because he's teething?

Cousins and tomatoes

When we visited family in Illinois, we got to see Wesley's cousins Annika and Kelan.  Here they are examining some tomatoes Ann got from the garden.  Kelan can only say a few words right now, but Annika has a HUGE vocabulary and is amazingly smart.  They're both super cute, so even though Wesley is not in this video, I had to share.

My new exersaucer (taken in midSept)

I took this video about a month ago.  This is Wesley's first time in his exersaucer (given to us as a gift from the Swems.  Thanks again guys!).  He had been in one at daycare, so it was obviously not a completely new thing for him.  A month later, he's not nearly as wobbly as in this video and can reach more things easier and with more "grace".  Here, he tends to whack everything.  It's still fun to watch.

Hilarious High Chair Fun

One night after having some rice cereal, Wesley decided that the purple toy on his high chair was absolutely hilarious.  We (Mom and Dad) never really understood why it was funny, but his laugh had to be filmed.  He kept bending over forward, scrunching up his shoulders and giggling.  It was really fun!
